Electrify our Transportation?? Lets Talk

As you know, the CAC is hosting a series of monthly conversations about our climate emergency. The Town Council has declared a Climate Emergency, and asked us to figure out how to eliminate all greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

As you may also know, our Governor signed an Executive Order that will forbid the sale of anything other than Electric Vehicles from 2035 on; just about the time we are trying to get to Carbon Neutrality.

This is a HUGE challenge.

As you also know, we are currently conducting a survey of all people of Fairfax, asking you what you think on all of the vital topics we are struggling with. I have posted the PRELIMINARY results of the Transportation Section of the survey above, so you can get a flavor for what we are learning.

To be clear; I do not have an electric car, I cant afford one. Also, the electrical service to my house, which was built in 1964, is too small to supply an EV.  I get, very much, the challenge this EV thing poses. And yet, it is our future, and we need to talk about how we can work together to help us all get as close to this goal as we feasibly can.

We do not have answers. We are convinced that the people of this town have the savvy to figure it out, with us.

Please take our survey, if you haven't. Please join our next Climate Conversation, on NOVEMBER 9, 6:30-7:30.

It is so inspiring to be part of such a can-do community. Help us brainstorm things we can do, to move us towards the needed goal.

In the meantime - sign up for MCE, if you are still on PG&E, and sign up for Deep Green, if you are already on MCE.

It matters.

Putting our heads together will produce the best solutions. As more people work through their projects and learn what works, they can become resources for the community.

A couple of ways to address the hurdle of installing EV charging in homes that have too-small of an electrical service are the EV Match program and NeoCharge (https://www.evmatch.com/) (https://www.getneocharge.com/).

Making progress on these issues will help us grow together as a community.

We can’t afford to change our heating and water heater and frankly we wouldn’t want to. At least now when we have to endure power outages we have hot water and heat. All electric we won’t. And since power outages have become more prevalent during wind events we won’t be changing. Maybe more people should take public transit and stop driving cars and eat less meat
