Electrify our Transportation?? Lets Talk

As you know, the CAC is hosting a series of monthly conversations about our climate emergency. The Town Council has declared a Climate Emergency, and asked us to figure out how to eliminate all greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

As you may also know, our Governor signed an Executive Order that will forbid the sale of anything other than Electric Vehicles from 2035 on; just about the time we are trying to get to Carbon Neutrality.

This is a HUGE challenge.

As you also know, we are currently conducting a survey of all people of Fairfax, asking you what you think on all of the vital topics we are struggling with. I have posted the PRELIMINARY results of the Transportation Section of the survey above, so you can get a flavor for what we are learning.

To be clear; I do not have an electric car, I cant afford one. Also, the electrical service to my house, which was built in 1964, is too small to supply an EV.  I get, very much, the challenge this EV thing poses. And yet, it is our future, and we need to talk about how we can work together to help us all get as close to this goal as we feasibly can.

We do not have answers. We are convinced that the people of this town have the savvy to figure it out, with us.

Please take our survey, if you haven't. Please join our next Climate Conversation, on NOVEMBER 9, 6:30-7:30.

It is so inspiring to be part of such a can-do community. Help us brainstorm things we can do, to move us towards the needed goal.

In the meantime - sign up for MCE, if you are still on PG&E, and sign up for Deep Green, if you are already on MCE.

It matters.

I want to tell you about two conversations I have just been part of, and several that you can be part of, in ways that will help us to build a healthier climate.

This weekend, I had the chance to talk with a young woman, who is very intelligent, very educated, very committed to science. I asked her how we could get the younger community engaged in helping the Town to bend the Climate Curve; how do we inspire the kind of energy that they are putting into Social Equity, given that climate is the ultimate social equity issue.

This person told me that, in her experience, young people feel overwhelmed by the Climate Challenge. Yes, they understand that is important, but they think there is nothing one person can do, and they think that the problem is so big, anything they do won’t make a difference.

I get these feelings; and I suspect that they are not confined to the young! In truth, even to me, a confessed climate zealot, I wonder how we will ever come together and do what we need to do. The Climate Challenge is the ultimate Community Challenge. That is, the only way we are going to be able to make the needed change is if are able to come together, and work together, in the interests of all.

Then I remember what Nelson Mandela said, thinking about the struggles of the people of South Africa in the face of Apartheid; “It always seems impossible - until it’s done.”

I am watching, right now, another conversation. The National Academy of Medicine is broadcasting its Annual meeting for the first time to anybody, and for free. They are talking about their focus, now, on the two great challenges facing humanity - (1) the Covid virus and the need to rebuild our public health system, and (2) the need to overcome the climate crisis. They are launching their Second Grand Challenge - to protect human health by combatting climate change. They are asking the US Healthcare System to reduce its carbon footprint 50% by 2030.

If they can do it, surely, we can similarly come together and do our part.

Tonight, the Candidates for the Town Council will present to us their best thinking about how to lead Fairfax. We all need to listen, and to think about the kind of world we want to create.

Tomorrow, the Town of Fairfax Climate Action Committee will have its monthly meeting - and we welcome everyone to share your ideas.

On November 9, the Climate Action Committee will host its next Climate Emergency Conversation, talking about what we can do to make our transportation choices cleaner.

Join the conversation.

Do not give up.

It always looks impossible.

Until its done.

Join is.

If not us, who? If not now, when?

Please join us Monday night to start to talk about what we can come together to do. We must do this in ways that work for everyone. It will take our collective energy to make it happen. I look forward to talking on Monday night.

COMMUNITY FORUM to protect the climate

Just a reminder - we are trying to bring people together to help us build a plan to do something about the climate. I was talking to one person today, and she was telling me how depressing things are now, and how hopeless it felt.

It is true that none of us, alone, can turn back the dial on the climate. But, the good news is that, together, we can. But we must do it!

On Monday, October 12, we will have the first of a series of Fairfax Community Climate Forums to talk about our Climate Action Plan.

In 2014, Fairfax produced its first Climate Action Plan. We set a goal, then, to reduce our emissions and to show others that it can be done. Since that time, we have achieved the highest number of households using MCE Deep Green in the County, and we accomplished our goal years early.

When we work together, we can make change happen.

Monday, October 12, 6:30. Join us. We need you. Fairfax needs you. The world needs you.
